ABUJA—Former Senate President in the aborted Third Republic, Chief Ameh Ebute, has expressed concerns over the existence of 68 registered political parties in the political terrain, saying they were unwieldy for the nation’s democracy to make any meaningful development.

Ebute, who spoke at the unveiling of a political pressure group, Good Governance Ambassadors of Nigeria, GOGAN, in Abuja, said registration of multiple political parties without firm ideology was counter-productive to flourish partisan politics.

GOGAN, which was founded by a business mogul, Chief Felix Idiga, was conceived as support group to champion the anti-corruption crusade of President Muhammadu Buhari‘s administration as well as to project the President’s re-election bid in the 2019 general elections

Chief Ebute, who was chairman of the occasion, said:  “On the issue of political parties, it is my view that there is no political ideology for politicians to consider before jumping from one party to the other.

“The only ideology for now is fighting for access to the national cake so as to have a share of it. I am in support of a two party system. This will enable politicians choose whether to be a progressive or a conservative.”
