The Ondo State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Taofik Abdulsalam, has disclosed that the contractors handling various road projects in the state were allegedly owing the state government a sum of N5bn.

He explained that the amount was the contractual sum of all the road projects embarked upon by previous administrations but were never completed  by the contractors.

The commissioner stated this while speaking with journalists in Akure, the Ondo State capital on Tuesday.

He said the present administration was already asking the defaulting contractors to either complete the projects in time during the dry season or return the money to the state government.

Abdusalam, however, expressed assurance that the state government would complete all the road projects started by the last administration.

He said,” Most contractors handling road projects are owing the state government N5billion and they have stopped work. But we are presently holding talks with them to either complete the projects or return the money.

“We are assuring the people of Ondo State that none of the projects embarked upon by  the last administration will be abandoned, but those that need to be completed will be done.

” The state government will complete the Arakale road project in Akure, also that of Ondo township and Owo, and the Oba Ile road that are at various stages of completion will be completed by the present government. ”

The Commissioner also said some of the roads with defects shall be corrected, so as to give the state a face-lift, noting that the present administration was committed  to uplifting the state in every sector.

He also said that the rural roads in the state shall be concentrated upon in order to ease the transportation of goods to the urban centres.
