After weeks of intense controversy that greeted the outcome of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary elections in Ogun which saw Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s preferred governorship candidate, Abdulkabir Akinlade lose out to Dapo Abiodun, the former has dumped the ruling party to pursue his ambition in the Allied People’s Movement (APM)

The development which is coming just 48 hours to the closure of the December 1st window as spelt out by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act, for the substitution of governorship candidates, was announced on Thursday at the floor of the House of Representatives in Abuja, when the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara read the letter of 4 members of the House, who defected from their respective parties to other parties.

Apart from Akinlade representing Yewa South/Ipokia Federal Constituency in Ogun, the other three; Rabi’u Kaugama (Jigawa) defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Mohammed Ajalah (Kogi) dumped the APC for PDP and Salisu Koko (Kebbi) defected to the SDP from APC, citing attributed impunity and undemocratic tendencies in their various parties as reason for jumping ship.

Similarly, four members of the Ogun House of Assembly dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the APM.

The lawmakers, including the Majority Leader, Adeyinka Mafe; Chief Whip, Idowu Olowofuja (Abeokuta South 2); Tunde Sanusi (Obafemi-Owode); and Ganiyu Oyedeji (Ifo 2) had their defection letters read on the floor of the Assembly by the Speaker, Suraj Adekunbi on Thursday during plenary.

Akinlade’s defection puts to rest speculations about his fate in running in the 2019 gubernatorial race in the state, after his endorsement by Governor Amosun and the state chapter of the party failed to get him the ticket of the ruling party.
