Ajayi was on duty for Ahly in their round of 32 African Champions League clash yesterday.

“Ajayi has been allowed to travel to do his national duty after returning from Gabon,” Ahly stated on their official website on Tuesday.

Ajayi played for the National Under-23 team and the CHAN Eagles before signing for the Egyptian clubside. Speaking on the chance to earn his first cap with the senior national team, Ajayi expressed confidence that he will be able to make an impact.

“I thank Nigeria and Ahly. I will make you all proud of me.”

Ajayi caught the attention of Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr after starring with Ahly, winning last season’s Egyptian Premier League, Cup, Super Cup and second-placed African Champions League.

Since he joined the Cairo-based club in summer from Tunisian side CS Sfaxien on a four-year contract, Ajayi has been capped 64 times with Ahly, scoring 20 goals.

Nigeria are in group D of the World Cup, which takes place in Russia in June, competing with Argentina, Iceland and Croatia in the same group.
