Stand-in Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa has said it was important that the team qualified for next year’s AFCON after missing out on the last two editions, reports SCORENigeria.
“We needed the point in Johannesburg to qualify with a game in hand after we had lost out on the two tournaments,” Ahmed Musa said.
“We are happy we are back to a tournament Nigeria are very familiar with.
He revealed that the 2-0 loss they suffered in front of their fans in Uyo last year fired the team to get the result they needed in South Africa.
“The loss to South Africa in the first match of AFCON qualifiers brought out the best in us as we resolved not to lose any match again as a team and this eventually paid off,” he said.
“It was a thing of joy to qualify with a game in hand, the way we did when we qualified for 2018 World Cup.
“We are proud of our coaches and the back room staff for their efforts to make it happen for us.”
The Eagles will now host bottom team Seychelles in a formality match in March to conclude their Group E qualifying series.
