UYO—The leadership of All Progressives Congress, APC, in Akwa Ibom State has dispelled fears that former Governor Godswill Akpabio was capable of hijacking the party’s structure in the state if allowed to join the party.
State party Chairman, Mr Iniobong Okopido, made the clarification while reacting to reports that the Senate Minority leader was weighing the options of decamping from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to APC to advance his re-election bid in the Senate in 2019.
“Until he comes, the party is accommodating to everybody. It is a party for everybody. But he has not told me yet whether he is decamping to our party. The machinery of the party is so heavy that nobody can hijack it. If the president cannot hijack it, who else can hijack it?” he asked.
Senator Alloysius Etok, who Senator Akpabio replaced in the Red Chamber also weighed in, saying tersely that the party was waiting for him.
“We are waiting for him. Let him come first. You know in politics nothing is wrong but we have to watch the event and scenario,” he said.
Similarly, a chieftain of the party and Director, Air Worthiness, Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, Mr Ita Awak expressed doubt over the purported plan by the former governor to dump PDP, describing the reports as mere speculations.
