The 1985-2017 alumni of the Onireke High School (OHS), Ibadan on Friday commissioned a multi-million naira Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centre at the school premises.

“As alumni, we appreciate what we gained from this school and we are determined to continue to contribute positively to the development of the school which imparted knowledge to us and took us out of poverty and illiteracy.

“We felt that we should give back to the school that made us and this brought about the donation of this ICT laboratory with computers because, in this day and age, we know that ICT is very important because information rules the world.

“This multi-million naira project has 25 computers with all the accessories, a generator to power it and all the accessories of computer you can think of and there are still ongoing projects. This is just the tip of the iceberg to bring the school to a higher level.

“We want our alma mater to be ICT leading school in Oyo State and in Nigeria in general, we believe that what we are doing is to complement the effort of the state government because we know that government cannot do it alone,” Chairman, Think Tank Group of OHS, Sunday Obiyinka said on the occasion.

Obiyinka, who is the CEO of Extension Publication Limited also urged students of the school to take academics seriously.

Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mrs Iyabo Fatoki applauded the alumni of the school for complementing the efforts of the state government.

She said the project will assist the students as well as teachers in gaining more knowledge in ICT.

Also, chairman, governing council of the school, Elder Taiye Ayorinde thanked the alumni for the kind gesture, just as he stated that the school can now train students in computer science and data processing for WAEC, NECO and in professional ICT courses.

“The old students saw the urgent need for a standard computer laboratory and made it a project for them to set up one as soon as possible, at the beginning of this session the supply was made and we now have a fully networked computer laboratory.

“We want to thank our alumni for the donation of this complete computer laboratory that will be used to train our students. We equally hope to acquire more computers to be able to achieve 1 student, 1 PC standard in the learning of computer in this school,” he said.

Also, in her remarks, Principal of the school, Mrs Funmilayo Ukpong appreciated the donation of the computer laboratory as she pledged that the facilities will be judiciously utilised.
