Governor Aknwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Tuesday advocated constant social dialogue with labour leaders to ensure continuous industrial harmony in the state.

The governor said this during the inauguration of two-day training on ‘Trade Unionism, Collective Bargaining, and Leadership for Trade Union Leaders’ in Ikeja.

Ambode, who noted that the training was to promote social dialogue, said such was needed for ensuring public satisfaction.

The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions, Dr Benson Oke, said social dialogue should form part of the regulation of labour relations in the public sector.

He said, “Dialogue and bargaining can and should be key contributors to public sector efficiency. However, because competing interests are involved, neither is conflict-free. If governments and public-sector unions are to be encouraged to work together, then considerations of conflict management must be uppermost.”

Ambode stated that the government and organised labour in Lagos had utilised collective bargaining to concretise a symbiotic relationship.

The governor added that in the relationship between employers of labour such as the Lagos State Government and trade unions, certain misconceptions persisted, including that government and entrepreneurs sought to limit attainment of the aims of trade unions.

“This needs not be so. Enlightened nations and owners of capital reward the indispensable role of labour in the scheme of wealth production.

“The Lagos State Government is one of such enlightened owners of capital and employers of labour to whom the welfare and comfort of labour is of utmost importance,” he said.
