The President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki, of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Monday, stormed Osun State to visit the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Governorship Candidate, Senator Iyiola Omisore, to plead with him to support the PDP, in the re-run election, holding on Thursday.
Some of the polling units where the re-run election will be held, include Ife North and Ife South, in Osun State, where Omisore is very popular.
Speaking with Journalists after the visit, Saraki said he was confident that Senator Ademola Adeleke would win the re-run poll, and become the Governor of the State.
Dr. Doyin Okupe, Senator Abiodun Olujimi, and other PDP Leaders, were in the entourage of the Senate President, during the visit to Omisore, who left the PDP, following a protracted crisis over his Governorship ambition .
Recall, that a re-run was declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for the Osun State Governorship election, due to the margin of victory between the two leading candidates.
The election, one of the closest in Nigeria’s electoral history, was held on Saturday, to elect a new Governor for the South-Western State.
At the end of collation of results, Ademola Adeleke of the PDP, won majority votes of about 254,698, while Gboyega Oyetola of the APC, came a close second with 254,345 votes.
According to electoral rules, a re-run election can be so declared, if the margin of victory in an election is lower than cancelled votes, such as in Osun, where thousands of votes were cancelled in various Local Governments, while the vote difference between the leading candidates, was less than a thousand. In that case, a re-run will be held in only the affected areas where elections were cancelled.
