The military has appointed Major Gen. Rogers Nicholas as new commander for the counter-insurgency operation in the North East, Operation Lafiya Dole, to replaced Major General Ibrahim Attahiru.
Until his new appointment, Gen. Nicholas was the the Chief of Logistics at Army Headquarters in Abuja.
By this redeployment, Nicholas will be the fifth Theatre Commander of the operation, which is headquartered at the Military Control and Command Centre (MCCC) in Maiduguri, Borno State capital.
The first commander, Gen Abubakar Yashau was appointed after the Military Command and Control Centre (MCCC) was moved to Maiduguri in May 2015 shortly after President Muhammadu Buhari took over as the president. Yashau, who died in a motor accident later, was succeeded by Gen Hassan Umaru in 2016, while Gen Lucky Irabor took over the Command in February 2016.
Irabor was redeployed to the regional military cooperation in Chad, Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) as Field Commander in May 2017 and replaced by Gen Attahiru on June 1.
All effort to get confirmation from Army Headquarters proved abortive. Called made to the phone of General Usman, Director of Army Public Relations, were not answered at the time of going to press.
