An All Progressives Congress House of Assembly aspirant from Surulere Constituency 2, Mr Quadri Onikeku, has backed the direct primaries option adopted by the party to pick its Lagos candidates for the 2019 elections.
He said such would discourage corruption in electoral process.
Onikeku spoke at a press conference in Alausa on Friday on his intention to run.
He said, “The direct primaries option is in favour of people like me because when you talk of indirect primaries or the delegate system, a lot of money is involved; and where do I get such money? Direct primary is cheaper and more transparent because your work will speak for you.”
He pointed out that the people that would decide in the direct primaries were people in the local government area “that knows the aspirants personally. For me, I am going to enjoy the relationship that I have built over time. I may not have money to give to them.”
“My constituents know me; I was born in the LGA and went to school there. I have always been around them and I have served in various capacities as councillor, Public Relations Officer, personal assistant to a former deputy Majority Leader of the Lagos state House of Assembly, among others,” he said.
The youthful aspirant whose campaign slogan is ‘Game Changer 2019,’ said if elected, he would resolve among other things the problem of potable water, absence of a secondary school in Itire Ikate and the worrisome roads in the constituency.
“I am going to give my people responsible representation, legislate for better welfare condition, job creation, youth and women empowerment, among others,” he added.
