President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, on Thursday officially commissioned the newly-built international terminal for the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

The terminal, which is said to process over 15 million passengers annually, will also offer free Wi-fi and trolley services to passengers in line with international standards.

Buhari said the event represents yet another significant milestone for international air travellers in and out of the FCT.

“With the commissioning of this Terminal, Nigeria is moving towards achieving and meeting global aviation standards in facilitation, passenger processing and service delivery in tandem with international best practices,” he said.

The Managing Director, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Salleh Dunoma said earlier that foreign airlines are already on standby, ready to move into the facility after the Thursday commissioning.

The Emirates, British Airways and Ethiopian Airlines might be the first set of international airlines to use the facility built by the Chinese construction firm, CCECC.

The new terminal will see double the number of the 7.5 million passengers the old terminal usually handles.

“I wish to assure you therefore, that Government remains committed to developing Nigeria into Regional air transportation hub and thereby assuming its leadership in the aviation sub sector in Africa,” Buhari added.
