Lent is here again

Next Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, which signals the beginning of Lent. Lent is a solemn season when Christians, especially of the orthodox fold, engage in fasting (some denominations have already commenced their fasting), abstinence, repentance, moderation, mortification of the flesh and almsgiving. Usually, many people fast and abstain from certain activities (not necessarily sinful) that have become part of their regular living.

It’s a thing of the mind

Recently, a follower of my column got in touch and told me that the article on suicide prevention three weeks ago was timely because he was actually on the cliff edge. He has been going through depression because of financial crisis.

Re: Naturally determining the sex of your babies

Do not be surprised that we are still on this matter. Besides companionship, which God decreed as the primary reason for marriage, procreation comes next. And many people would love to have things their way, so the continuing interest in the pre-selection of the sex of babies is understandable. Today, we are going to deal with two questions, the fallout from last week’s article.

Daniel’s death as a metaphor

Daniel’s death as a metaphor

Parenting is tough business all the way. Each stage of your children’s development presents its peculiar challenges and occasional heartaches, but the high standard of care children need from birth to when they become toddlers make these two periods mentally draining.

Reality check

Reality check

My friend was taking his eight-year-old son to school last week in his SUV. Near the private school he attends are government-owned schools. Then he turned to his father and asked, “Daddy, these children walking to school, who attend public schools, do they live in houses?” My friend was stunned. His first thought was a sarcastic response: “No, they and their parents live under the bridges and on tree tops.” But he calmed down and explained to his son that they also live in houses like them. He explained further that attending public schools does not make them any less human or disadvantaged.

Knives: kitchen utensils not weapons

Knives: kitchen utensils not weapons

Last Sunday, we read about a 60-year-old man, Mr. Cletus Agulaka, who killed his 20-year old daughter, Onyinye Agulaka, over—wait for it—a missing torch light. Onyinye, it was reported, was due to do her traditional marriage the next day. The father, who came back home drunk from an outing, murdered Onyinye in cold blood with a machete while she was asleep.

Taking the bull by the horns

Taking the bull by the horns

Recently, news broke of a married pastor who defiled his maid. For me, this pastor is just plain dumb; he should not even bring the “work of the devil” excuse into this matter. Apparently, he has been eyeing the poor girl; it did not start today. He had sufficient time to sort out himself, but lust and foolishness apparently got the better of him.

A tale of two health systems

Rivers police allegedly wade into land dispute, torture suspect into coma

Citizen Adebayo Akinwunmi, 41, a Nigerian, was shot by armed robbers in his house, in Ogun State, near Lagos. He specifically requested his elder brother, Babatunde Akunwunmi, to take him to Reddington Hospital, where his company had a retainership. He probably took that decision to get prompt medical attention.

Congratulations, Meghan and Harry

Will it happen? When? Yes, it is happening today from noon at St. George’s Chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle. I am one of those who have been very happy and excited since Prince Harry and Ms Meghan Markle announced their engagement on November 27 last year.

Supreme selflessness

Supreme selflessness

I was just amazed at the tenderness and love with which this woman carried and handled another person’s child who will probably never to able to mutter “thank you” not to talk of paying her back in future for her good deeds
