Court sentences 3 businessmen to one-year imprisonment for stealing

AN Upper Area Court 1, sitting in Kasuwan Nama in Jos on Friday sentenced a 28-year-old welder, Friday Yakubu; Manasseh Ishaku a 30- year-old mechanic, and Amos Kadiya, a 30-year –old mason, to 1-year imprisonment for stealing.

The judge, Lawal Suleiman, sentenced the accused to 4months for conspiracy or a fine of N2000, 8months for mischief or a fine of N3000 and one year or a N5000 fine for stealing, also ordered that N20, 000 be paid as compensation to the Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JED).

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Monday Dabit, told the court that the case was reported on Sept. 16 by one Ayuba Danladi, a leader of a vigilante group on Rukuba Road at the Area Command Police Station.

The prosecutor said that the accused were caught in the act of removing the copper wires in the community’s transformer.

On arraignment, the accused pleaded guilty and confessed that it was not their first time of stealing copper wires from the transformer.

Dabit said that the 3 count-charge contravened Sections 97, 327 and 287 of the Penal Code Law.
