The government of Cross River State has taken a swipe at some Christian leaders in the state for daring to criticise the state governor, Senator Ben Ayade, saying they should go into the political field.

Last week, a section of Christian leaders in the state, under the auspices of Christian Leaders Forum, led by Bishop Josef Bassey declared that Governor Ayade does not deserve a second term, because of his poor performance. But in a sharp reaction, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Mr. Victor Ekpo, said: “What the Christian leaders said can be described as lack of information. Bishop Josef Bassey is a renown Bishop we respect. But I wonder why a cleric would step into political arena to start judging government.
“If you are a Bishop and you have passion for your state as you claimed, then you should call the attention of the governor, his appointees or the deputy or any adviser, if you feel there are problems.”

“I expected the cleric to say Ayade should go unopposed to enable him complete his signature projects because a lot is going on. So, if Ayade goes back for second term, he will complete the two signature projects he promised.“The Christian Associations should pray for the governor, because the Bible also says you should pray for your leader. I think the Bishop should pray that God should give the governor the grace, good health and fresh ideas to achieve his signature projects and not criticise him on pages of newspapers and social media.”
