The Kwara State branch of the Congress of Nigeria’s Political Parties holds that the defection of politicians from one party to another is good for the nation’s democracy.

The CNPP, in a statement signed by the state chairman, Alhaji Adebayo Lawal, said the issue of defection was not strange to Nigerians.

He said, “The flurry of movements of members from one party to another in search of an enabling environment to further their political ambitions, though unusual, is a good omen for our political system because it is a pointer to the fact that our democracy is coming of age.

“It happened in the Western Region Parliament of Nigeria in the early sixties when members defected from the Mabolaje Grand Alliance to join the Action Group in order to form the government under the revered leadership of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

“It also happened in the second Republic, up to the present Fourth Republic, when the current President, Muhammadu Buhari, was a beneficiary of the defection of five state governors from the People’s Democratic Party  to the All Progressives Congress in 2014.”
