Lagos—A 27-year-old driver, Nureni Olawale, with a new generation bank, who allegedly damaged a Mercedes Benz G-Wagon worth N26,700,000, was yesterday arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate’s Court.

The defendant is facing a five-count charge bordering on reckless and dangerous driving, injury, damage and obstruction preferred against him by the Police.

The prosecutor, Inspector Mawari Solomon, told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offences on February 16, at about 6:30a.m., along Bourdillion Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.

Solomon told the court that Olawale, who was driving a Prado Jeep with number plates BDG 881 AC, drove same recklessly and dangerously in the public highway.

The prosecutor said: “Olawale drove against traffic knowing it is prohibited by the road traffic law, and caused injury to one Mr. Richard Alabi.”

According to him, the defendant damaged one Mercedes Benz G-Wagon G65, 2014 model with number plates ARK 10 DC, worth N26,608,301, property of the complainant, Richard Alabi.

“The defendant, being the driver in charge of the said Prado Jeep, willfully obstructed the free flow of traffic,” he said.

The offence committed is punishable under Sections 19, (1), 27 schedule 1, 29 and 45 of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State, 2012.

However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The defendant’s lawyer U. N. Ezeokeke, urged the court to grant the defendant bail in liberal terms.

Consequently, Magistrate A. A. Famobiwo granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000, with two sureties in like sum.

She said the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of performance of their civic responsibility.

The case was adjourned till March 19, for mention.
