The Edo and Delta State governments have called on border communities in the states to live harmoniously, pending the determination of the boundaries in contention by the National Boundary Commission.

They also called on the commission to expedite action on the demarcation.

The call was contained in a communiqué issued after a joint inter-state boundary meeting at the Government House in Benin.

The Special Adviser to Governor Godwin Obaseki on Media and Communication Strategy, Crusoe Osagie, said in a statement that the two states committed to prevailing on the NBC to expedite action on the final demarcation and survey of the disputed boundaries.

They said that a committee had been set up to look into the legal aspect of the boundaries issues relating to the two states.

They also listed the members of the committee to include the attorney general of each state, the two commissioners of police, chairmen of the Orhionmwon and Esan South-East Local Government Areas of Edo State and those of the Ethiope East, Ukwani and Ika South Local Government Areas of Delta State.

Other members include the surveyors-general of the states and the deputy chief of staff of Edo State.

The Edo State Deputy Governor, Mr Philip Shaibu, urged the border communities to sheath their swords over claims and counter-claims of land ownership, stressing that efforts had been intensified to resolve the dispute.

Shaibu, however, pointed out that the two states ought not to have such issues as they were formerly under the defunct Bendel State and shared historical and cultural ties.
