Kamarudeen Ogundele, Ado Ekiti
One of the Independent National Electoral Commission accredited observers in Ekiti State, Kalu Victor, of the African Initiative, has urged the commission to extend the date for the Continuous Voter Registration to capture more electorate.
According to him, the huge turnout of electorate at ward level is a strong reason for INEC to extend the exercise by a minimum of two days.
He said this during a monitoring of the registration centres on Monday.
Victor said, “I am surprised at the huge turnout at the ward level. We experienced a low turnout the local government level but this is closer to them and I think that is why the turnout has been very impressive.
“Since it commenced at the ward level on April 11, and to this day, we are amazed at the huge turnout.
“This is why we are expecting that it would be very helpful if the exercise is extended for at least two days by INEC and more personnel should be added to those in each centre. All the places we have been to; the people yearn for extension of the registration.”
Meanwhile, Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has said prospective voters who could not be registered during the just-concluded voters registration exercise at ward level would be conveyed to the local government offices of the INEC to do so by the state government
He stated this in Ado-Ekiti on Monday while monitoring the six-day continuous voter registration exercise at ward level that ended on Monday.
Fayose also ordered that a generator be purchased to help provide power.
