MetersTHE Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) on Tuesday, said it has the mandate to ensure that all manufactured and installed meters are tested for accuracy and specifications in compliance with the metering code of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission(NERC).

It said this will guarantee that electricity customers get value for their money.

The Managing Director, Engr. Peter Ewesor stated this in Abuja during the inauguration of the Parastatal SERVICOM Committee (PSC) of NEMSA.

He said: “One important thing is that the only guarantee that that meter is the right type and the accuracy is correct that the power you receive and use is what you are paying for is that seal.

“It is the seal that will show that the meter has passed through the national meter test issuance at NEMSA where it is expected to be routinely tested to be sure that the quality of meter that was approved for the manufacturer and supplier has been installed.

“ Where this is not there, where you need to follow up is to report to NEMSA so that we can go there and find out what type of meter because we will still carry out on sight test of the meter to find out whether it meets the required accuracy and required specification in line with the metering code which the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission NERC has put in place to guide the manufacturing, supply, deploy and installation of electricity meters in our industry.”

To this end, he urged customers to report meters without NEMSA seal which may not have been tested.

“Unsealed meters should be reported to NEMSA because what this means is that you have brought in a meter that has not passed through the required route and channel.

“Once a meter is to be used in Nigeria, it should have a certification to say this meter has been tested and localized and can meet all our environmental conditions and specifications. Then when you are buying a large quantity to be deployed we carry out a routine test. This is to find out whether the accuracy of the meter is correct.”

Meanwhile, the MD also disclosed that the agency has slashed its inspectorate service period to 7 days from 14 days, which he said was in line with the Presidential directive on Ease of Doing Business.

According to him, the step has improved its service delivery and business rating adding that with the SERVICOM in place, NEMSA will consult with partner agencies to ensure they synergise on timely delivery of services to customers in the power sector.

The National Coordinator, SERVICOM, Mrs Nnenna Akajemili who inaugurated the NEMSA chapter said NEMSA had spearheaded quality service delivery and that more customers are becoming aware of the safety roles it plays in the sector.

“We should be able to bring into what we are doing, best practices, international standards so that we can reduce the level of accidents that happen when people know and are better guided on how to run their electricity so that Nigerians can stop feeling short-changed especially on meters,” she said.
