Enugu police arrests suspected Fulani herdsman over alleged illegal weapon

POLICE detectives in Enugu have arrested a Fulani herdsman for allegedly being in possession of an Ak47 rifle with 7.62 ammunition.

The suspected herder was picked up yesterday by the security operatives following a distress call by a resident that he was at a farmland located at Isigwe Ugbawka in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Confirming the story, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Eebere Amarizu, said on Saturday that the suspected herder is now helping the police operatives in their full-scale investigations.

Amarizu further said, “ Following the arrest and recovery, the commissioner of police Enugu state command Danmallam Mohammed who had visited the farmland and the community in the company of his officers and
the notable indigene of the area Comrade Fidelis Edeh together with a local government Councillor in the area Peter Edeh commended the effort of the community with their timely and useful information which led to the arrest of the herder and recovery of weapon”.

He maintained, “the State Police Command will continue to partner with communities under Community Safety partnership of the community policing to ensure that our communities continue to remain safe and secured since security is everybody’s business and requires the collaborative effort.

While reacting to the incident, the Chairman of Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu state Honourable Ikechukwu Ubagu expressed happiness with the response of the police, the arrest and recovery of the weapon, pointing out that there is no tension in the area as farmers are still on duty.

Comrade Fidelis Edeh, a farmer and indigene of the area also lauded the effort of the commissioner of police as well as the prompt intervention of the police when they were contacted.

According to him, the prompt intervention of the police and the visit of the police showed that police is responsive, stressing that there is no tension in the area.

Meanwhile, the commissioner of Police Danmallam Mohammed has released all the state commands distress/emergency numbers to further strengthen the police public partnership in the area and for prompt and useful information.
