Mikel Arteta is the strong favourite to succeed Arsène Wenger as manager at Arsenal, with productive talks having progressed between his camp and the club.

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis wants Arsene Wenger’s successor to fulfil a head coach role to fit into the club’s new management structure.

The former Gunners midfielder, who currently works under as assistant coach under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City , is now the frontrunner for the post after Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri all but removed himself from the running .

Allegri and Arteta were seen as the two leading contenders ahead of Arsene Wenger’s final match in charge on Sunday, but it is now felt that it would be extremely difficult to tempt the former away from Turin.
