WARRI—THE family of Samson Omonuwa, a resident allegedly battered and killed by police officers in Warri, Delta State, has called on the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG, Zone 5, to carry out a comprehensive and independent investigation into his death and bring his killers to book.

A petition to the AIG, D’Zebra Consult, a firm of legal practitioners, acting for the father of the deceased, Mr. Anthony Omonuwa, said: “Sir, we implore you to take over the case file for a thorough and independent investigation so that the murderers of this innocent man can be brought to justice.”

The family’s counsel, C.D.S Omon-Irabor,  in the letter dated May 14, 2018,  said: “Our client complained that his son and his friend had an altercation which led to a fight at Kolokolo Layout, Enerhen, Warri. Then his friend laid a complaint at the Enerhen Police Station.

“Three policemen, Lucky, Victor and Happy, came to arrest the deceased, Samson. Right there and then, they clubbed him to a state of stupor. In his unconscious state, he was carried to the Police Station at Enerhen and subsequently, transferred to “B” Division, Okumagba Avenue, Warri, where they further beat him till he died.

“The mother, Mrs. Omonuwa ran to the “B” Division to plead for her son’s release so that she could get him treated not knowing that he was already dead.

“So both mother and mother-in-law of the deceased were asked to sign a document after which the DPO ordered two policemen in mufti to accompany the two mothers to the hospital and on getting there, he was confirmed dead already and the two policemen deposited the corpse in the mortuary.”
