For allegedly stealing his neighbour’s two children, the police, yesterday, arraigned a 39-year-old farmer, Semiu Yusuf, in an Iyaganku Chief Magistrate’s Court in Ibadan.
Yusuf of Maku Ogbere Idi-Osan, Ibadan, was arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy and enticing children.
The Prosecutor, Inspector Sunday Ogunremi, told the court that Yusuf and others now at large conspired to steal the children.
Ogunremi said Yusuf, by the act, attempted to deny a woman, Kehinde Kolapo, of the care of two of her children aged 11 and five.
He told the court that Yusuf committed the offence on February 14 at about 2p.m. at Ogbere Idi- Osan area of Ibadan.
According to Ogunremi, “Yusuf was a co-tenant of the children’s mother and claimed that he saw them in town when he was going somewhere on a motorcycle.
“Mrs Kolapo was said to have left the children with their senior sister, when the incident happened.”
The offence, he said, contravened Sections 516 and 371 (1) of the Criminal Code, Cap 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The defence counsel, Mr. Akinola Fashina, urged the court to give his client bail on liberal terms.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Abiona Richard, granted the accused bail in the sum of N250,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Mrs Richard said one of the sureties must be a civil servant on a Grade Level 09, while the second should be a blood relation and be gainfully employed.
She adjourned the case till March 22 for mention.
