Roger Federer improved his world ranking from No 10 to No 6 last week but is targeting an ever higher seeding as he chases more trophies.

Federer told  Sky Sports: “It gives you opportunities. Our ranking system is interesting, to say the least, because things can change very quickly.

“We saw how far ahead Novak was, eight months ago. But now he’s No 2 and Murray goes on a 30-match winning streak. I’ve been in all the positions before.

“Rankings are good for me because it means you don’t have to face the best guys early, like I had to do in Australia and Indian Wells. Things will get easier.

“When you become world No 1 at this point, you can’t do it without winning a Grand Slam. It’s basically impossible, one without the other.”
