Success Nwogu,  Ilorin

A labour unionist, Issa Aremu, on Sunday urged the federal and state governments to provide sports infrastructure in the country.

He said that was one of the lessons to be learnt from Russia, hosts of the just-concluded 2018 World Cup.

He spoke after the World Cup final between France and Croatia at a viewing centre he provided free for fans in Ilorin.

Aremu said by hosting the World Cup, Russia had generated a lot of revenue even though its team did not reach the final.

He also called on the governments to provide an enabling environment for sports people to excel. He called on the Federal Government to attract sports stars born abroad to compete for the country, adding that the world champions France have more players of African descent in their team, which helped them to win the tournament.

Aremu said the competition reunited many Nigerians, noting that good football displayed by the two finalists impressed the viewers.
