No fewer than five persons have lost their lives in an auto crash involving a Honda Sport Utility Vehicle with the number plate, EPE 307 XU and a Sienna marked, AK ILIKA 1 on Anyigba Itobe Road, Kogi State.
Our correspondent learnt that the accident happened around 3.45 pm on Friday when one of the drivers attempted to avoid a pothole but lost the control of the vehicle and rammed into an oncoming vehicle.
As of the time of filing this report men of the Nigerian Army were working frantically to evacuate three persons still trapped in the vehicle.
The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in the state, Mr Olusegun Martins, who confirmed the accident to the News Agency of Nigeria, said two other persons sustained serious injuries in the accident.
Martins said, “He said that the accident which happened at about 3:30pm involved two Sienna sport utility vehicles with the number plate, EPE 307 XU and AK ILIKA 1 with the sticker of Nigerian Army Officers Wives Association (NAOWA) on it.
“The injured victims had been taken to a nearby hospital in the area for treatment and the corpses recovered had been deposited in a mortuary.”
The FRSC boss added that investigation into the cause of the accident had commenced.
An eyewitness told NAN that the affected vehicles were coming from the opposite direction, adding that they collided when one of them was trying to avoid a deep pothole on the road.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, William Aya, said he would get back to our correspondent with comments on the incident, but he had yet to do so as of press time.
