Flood destroys 100 houses in Kaduna metropolis

KadunaHEAVY downpour which started from Thursday afternoon to the early hours of Friday morning has destroyed over 100 houses in some parts of Kaduna metropolis.

Most of the areas affected are Barnawa, rigasa, kigo road, kinkinau, rigachikun, kudendan, unguwar Rimi all in Kaduna metropolis.

Findings gathered that residents had to close from work to rush to their houses in order to remove their properties which had been submerged in water as a result of the heavy downpour.

A source who pleaded for anonymity remarked that most of the houses especially those living around the river bank had been destroyed.

“River Kaduna has overflown its banks. So it’s dangerous for residents living around the river banks to continue to live or stay there, source declared.

Also, speaking a journalist, Femi Adi, who lives in Kudendan told our reporter that the heavy downpour had led to flooding in the community, saying, his house was affected as water had found its way in his living room and kitchen.

“In fact, I have to relocate my wife and my two kids to another part of the metropolis. All our valuable items were ravaged in the water. I don’t know where to start, he said.

It will be recalled that a month ago before the flood, the Kaduna state Environmental Protection Authority (KEPA) had issued what was known as the ‘Kada Flood alert’ warning communities along River Kaduna to maintain vigilance over the possible outbreak rainstorms in the areas.

This was because according to the statement the river has already overflown its banks at different locations across the metropolis.

The chairman of the state Emergency Management Agency, Ezekiel Baba Kerik had warned people living in prone areas to vacate from the areas, saying in areas already affected they have deployed their staff to assess the level of damage in those areas with the view to sending relief materials.

He also advised residents from throwing leather bags, pure water sachets, objects in gutter and drainages as they could be more flood before the raining season ends.
