Ford Motor Company recently excited automobile enthusiasts globally as it showcased in grand style the 2019 edition of its Mustang Bullitt, which turned out as one of the biggest revelations of this year’s North American International Auto Show, also referred to as Detroit auto show in the United States.
The first-built model of the commemorative-edition car was sold for $300,000 at the event, which was the final day of Barrett-Jackson’s auction in Scottsdale, Arizona.
An American technology news and media network, ‘The Verge’ describes the event as emotional and a reference to the glory days of the pony car era.
“It was a tug at Mustang lovers’ heart strings and a reassurance Ford hasn’t abandoned those who hunger for nostalgic cars,” it states in a report.
The new Bullitt was introduced to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1968 model of the car driven by Steve McQueen in the film “Bullitt” of the same year, Sven Gustafson of Autoblog reported.
Proceeds from the auction are meant for the Boys Republic, a California school for troubled kids, which McQueen attended.
The Verge says, “Most of us are too young to have seen the movie attached to the car in theatres 50 years ago, or to understand the thrill it created among car enthusiasts that is now legend.
“Its legacy can be summed up in a 10-minute car chase, in which the Mustang is driven by the Hollywood legend Steve McQueen. The film won the Academy Award for best film editing and a nomination for best sound, presumably attributed to the growl of those V8 engines. It’s a cult classic, and it still looks fresh in an old-school cool way. Smoke burns from the tires as the Mustang twists and turns through the streets of San Francisco.”
According to the report, Ford brought McQueen’s granddaughter to the stage to roll out the limited edition Mustang at the North American International Auto Show.
“But that’s not all. It also showed one of a couple original Mustangs used in the film, a faded Highland Green original. Turns out, the car had been hiding out in a New Jersey garage since the 1980s, in true getaway car spirit.”
Other vehicle auctions at the event that set world record sales are a 1958 Chevrolet 3100 Custom pickup ($198,000), a 2018 Dodge Demon ($159,500) and a 1951 Cadillac Custom Coupe ($150,700).
The auction also hosted a United States president for the first time in its 47-year history, George W. Bush, who came with a comedian and car enthusiast, Jay Leno.
The newest Bullitt is said to be based on the Mustang GT and is equipped with a 5.0-litre V8 engine. It pumps out 475 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. Its top speed is 163 mph.
Other unique features
The Verge gives the car’s other unique features, saying what makes it special is at first glance — its colour scheme — a bend on the dark highland green. It’s also available in a less vintage shadow black. It has chrome accents and a circular, white shifter lever for its six-speed manual-only transmission.
“One thing you can get on the new Bullitt Mustang that highlights its new-car tech: a 12-inch LCD touchscreen. One thing you can’t get from the old: Steve McQueen’s brand of classic cool,” it states.
The introduction of the Mustang created a new class of automobile known as the pony car. The Mustang’s styling, with its long hood and short deck, proves wildly popular and inspires a host of competition, says Wikipedia.org.
TopGear quotes the vehicle’s Chief Designer, Darrell Behmer, as saying, “It’s my favourite Mustang. It’s devoid of stripes, spoilers and badges. It doesn’t need to scream about anything, it’s just cool.”
The auto journal also notes that as Behmer notes, there are no spoilers or stripes, but there are 19in aluminium wheels, subtle chrome accents around the grille and front windows and red Brembo brakes.
“Inside, there’s much leather, a 12in digital LCD instrument cluster, and unique green accent stitching on the dash, door panels and centre console,” it states.
Riders of this special car are expected to get a special treat with its manual gearbox on board, equipped with a white cue ball gear knob in a nod to the original.
Three options are available: an electronics pack including better audio, memory seats, navigation and blind-spot info as well as the MagneRide semi-active suspension and Recaro black leather seats.
