A Fulani herdsman has been arrested for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl in Umuifi community, in the Anioma-Isu Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

It was gathered that the victim, a student of Union Secondary School, Ague-Isu, was taken to a medical facility for treatment after the assault.

The teenager, while calling on the state government to look into the activities of Fulani herdsmen in her community, said she had yet to recover from the incident which happened on Monday.

She said, “I had gone to the farm to get vegetables when I was accosted by the herdsman. He came to our farm with his cows and asked me for water and food, which I said I did not have. He went and got more cows to surround me. He said if I allowed him to have sex with me, he would give me N700. I refused and started running away. He chased me and used the back of his cutlass to attack me. He then raped me. I want the government to help me. Young girls are no longer safe to go the farm to help their parents. The man should be prosecuted.”

Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Anioma-Isu community Mr. Festus Nwachukwu, condemned the activities of Fulani herdsmen in Umuifi Anioma-Isu community, describing it as a threat to the agricultural revolution of the state government.

He said, “Even though the suspect has been arrested by operatives of the state police command, this act is an abomination; we are going to cleanse our land. Fulani herdsmen are destroying our farms. If you want to talk to them, they will threaten you with knives. Our major occupation is farming; we can no more farm because of them.

“Government policies on agriculture are being threatened in the Onicha LGA; this girl was raped by a Fulani man who threatened to kill her if she refused.”

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Lovet Odah, said she had yet to be briefed on the incident.

She promised to contact the Divisional Police Officer in Isu for details on the incident.
