• Union accuses VC of impunity
Aggrieved members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Ekiti State, yesterday passed vote of no confidence in their zonal chairman, Prof. Olu Olufayo, over alleged meddlesomeness in the affairs of FUOYE.

The lecturers, under the aegis of Forum of Concerned Academics (FCA), while vowing to defend the image of the institution, alleged that Olufayo had continually engaged in actions capable of destroying it.Led by the chairman, Prof. Sola Omotola, and spokesman, Dr. Wasiu Alli, the FCA told newsmen in Ado-Ekiti yesterday that the press conference organised by the zonal chairman was aimed at destroying the institution.

Apart from declaring the zonal chairman persona non grata, the teachers also dissociated the local branch from the press conference held in Akure, Ondo State, recently where “unfounded allegations” were raised against the management of FUOYE.

“The elements of blackmail and falsehood in the press conference included the claim that the university management deducted pensions from staff but failed to remit it to appropriate pension administrators, recruitment of professors without PhD and extortion of science students.

“We had since reported the true picture of these lies and blackmail.” the lecturers said. But Olu countered the allegations, stressing that the lecturers lack the locus standi to pass vote of no confidence in him.“We did not mean to cause crisis in the university, but we became confrontational when the VC started victimising those who were fighting for good governance in FUOYE.

Two lecturers were sacked and they are now in the court of law.“If the VC is sure of himself, let him allow an independent panel from the federal ministry of education to probe our allegations to lay this lingering crisis to rest.”

In the same vein, ASUU, Akure zone has urged the Federal Government and other relevant agencies to caution the FUOYE VC, Prof. Kayode Soremekun, over gross abuse of office. The union said this at a press conference in Akure yesterday led by Olufayo, who also alleged threats to life of some members of the union by the VC and his cohorts. He lamented that Soremekun, who was accused of turning the institution to mafia community, resorted to violence, harassment, intimidation and other acts of impunity to repress the union.

In a ‘State of FUOYE’ document sent to the federal ministry of education, the VC was accused of gross misconduct, abuse of office, substandard infrastructure, irregular appointments and promotion of cronies, misappropriation of funds, among others.
According to him, instead of the VC to address the issues raised by the union, he started launching media attacks on the branch of the union at FUOYE and the zonal leadership of ASUU.
