Growth: FG directs MDAs to implement UNFPA programmes

The Federal Government has directed Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to implement United Nations Fund for Population (UNFPA) support programmes and projects in line with its Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP).

Dr Sanjo Faniran, the Deputy Director, International Cooperation, Ministry of Budget and National Planning, gave the advice at a meeting of stakeholders on UNFPA supported programmes and projects in Abuja.

Faniran said that the meeting was to ensure that MDAs activities supported by UNFPA were in line with priorities of the government in area of reproductive health, family planning, population development, education and other sectors of the economy.

“UNFPA has mandate to support reproductive health, family planning and population development in Nigeria as it does globally and this component is one of the priority programmes in the ERGP that Nigeria is implementing since 2017,’’ he said.

The deputy director, who said that ERGP was expected to run from 2017 to 2020, urged MDAs to ensure resource utilisation and proper implementation of UNFPA support programmes and projects to achieve ERGP.

He said that his ministry was sensitising MDAs on the need to put their counterpart funds in the budget to enable UNFPA released its own for programmes implementation.

Faniran also underscored the need for UNFPA to find a way of enhancing its capacity in area of work plan preparation and implementation.

Dr Kayode Afolabi, the Director, Reproductive Health, Federal Ministry of Health, who commended the UNFPA support programmes, said the programmes assisted in building capacity of health personnel to educate huge number of people on family planning.
