Increase doctors’ salaries to curb brain drain

DoctorsMedical doctors, under the aegies of the Society of Family Physicians of Nigeria, on Thursday, advised governments at all levels to curb brain drain in the medical field through periodic review of the condition of service of the medical professionals in country.

The immediate past President of the Association, Dr Akin Moses,who stated this in Akure, Ondo state capital, during a press conference to herald the 21st Annual General and Scientific Meeting of the association, said this will discourage migration of doctors and other professionals from traveling out of the country to foreign countries.

Moses, who noted brain-drain could be discouraged in the country, only if the government m do the needful, particularly in the area of health sector, saying leaving the country to seek greener pasture outside Nigeria, was not a good development for the health sector of Nigeria.

He noted that brain-drain affects many other fields in the country, saying “this is not only noted in the health sector, so there was a need for government to do the needful.”

He said: “All we need for the brain-drain in the health sector is more motivation from the government, the government should provide better conducive working environment for us

“Family doctors are not the highest hit (of the brain-drain), we have many of us (physicians) who are spread across the country and we are doing well especially at the primary healthcare level but we need more all important motivation from the government to provide the facilities with which we walk, especially at primary and secondary healthcare level.

The Vice President 1 and Acting President of the SOFPON, Dr Musa Dankyau, in his remark described family physicians as critical to the Nigeria healthcare system, noting that the sector contributed to the transformation of healthcare delivery system , especially, primary and secondary healthcare.

Dankyau said: “Family physicians or family doctors are known to be five-star doctors as they function as care providers, decision makers, communicators , community leaders and team members.

“Family doctors are therefore central to any form of action to deliver better healthcare to our communities.”
