ABUJA – STUDENTS of tertiary institutions across the 36 states, on Thursday, passed a vote of confidence on the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Idris, for his genuine efforts in addressing the security challenges bedeviling the nation.

They said the smashing of various notorious kidnapping gangs, particularly the group led by Evans, the bursting of several armed robbery syndicates, and the prompt arrest of some perpetrators of the carnage going on in some troubled parts of the country, earned the Police IG their accolades rather than knocks.

Speaking under the auspices of Coalition of Concerned Nigerian Students, CCNS, the young scholars noted that while IGP Ibrahim’s call for expanding and reforming the police force has been met with deafening silence, it was shameful that opportunists and corrupt politicians could seek to use the senseless killings in some parts of the country to further their opposition to his good works.

National President of CCNS, Comrade Omoba Michael urged the  IGP to continue with his onerous task of policing the nation.

He also called on politicians to, in the interest of the average Nigerian, support the work of the security agencies and give backing to the IGP’s call for improved funding as well as provision of better equipment and manpower to the police force.

He said: “We as students having been beneficiaries of the prompt attention given to security on our campuses by the current leadership of the police, pass an unwavering and unalloyed vote of confidence on the leadership of IGP Ibrahim Kpotum Idris, and urge the fine officers under him not to allow the present challenges to deter them from carrying out their duties of building a 21st century police force.

“We have observed with dismay the attempts by some vested interests to politicise what ordinarily ought to be a national disaster  on the singular note that they are in search of cheap political points.

“All politicians should, in the interest of the average Nigerians, support the work of the security agencies and give backing to the Inspector General of Police and his team.”
