City Gate, Abuja emerged the champion of the 2nd edition International Inter Club Badminton Competition, which ended at Ikoyi Club during the weekend.
The winners won two gold medals, while the Nigeria Police team finished second with one gold and two silver medals. The host team finished third with one gold medal.
Eleven teams participated in the competition with one from Accra, Ghana.
Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, who was represented by Olawale Olowu, Commissioner for power, oil and gas, solid mineral, stated that the state government was ready to ensure that sports develops in the state.
He also commended the Ikoyi Club for the successful hosting of the event and assured that the state, through the Sports commission is ready to partner willing organisations to help develop and promote sports in the state. The state government also made a donation of N2million to support the club.
Chairman of the Badminton Section of the Ikoyi Club, Sunday Wusu commended the teams and assured that the competition has come to stay. He also praised all the sponsors for their backing and said that their support has been massive since the competition made its debut last year.
He also noted that the players showed discipline during the competition and hailed those who won medals and wished those who fell short, better luck next year.
“I must commend all the clubs and players who took part in this edition of the championship. They are the ones who make the championship what it is, so a big thank you to them. I must also commend the Lagos State government and the sponsors for their support,” Wusu added.
Chairman of the Lagos State Badminton Association (LSBA), Frank Orbih stated that the championship would become better as it progresses promising a better event next year. He said the LSBA is partnering clubs to ensure that badminton becomes a top sport in the country.
“The competition has come to stay and we are working with all the clubs in Lagos to ensure that Badminton grows to become one of the top sports. I wish all the clubs well and we are working had to have more clubs next year especially from Ghana.”
