No fewer than 1,119 people have received cash and materials worth N40,146,000 from Jaiz Zakat & Waqf Trust Fund as Zakat proceeds.

The beneficiaries were drawn from the South-East, South-South, North-East and North-Central (Abuja).

At the Abuja distribution, which was held on Wednesday, the Executive Director, Jaiz Zakat, Abdullahi Shuaib, lamented the increasing poverty rate in the country.

He regretted that access to qualitative and affordable housing, medical and educational services was far out of the reach of the poor and the needy in the country.

These, he said, accounted for 98.52 per cent of the overall Zakat funds disbursed to the poor and the needy across the four regions of the country.

Wealthy Nigerian Muslims, he noted, could make a difference in the life of less-privileged by paying their Zakat as and when due and encourage others to donate generously.

Explaining how the distribution went, Shuaib said N4.9m was disbursed in the South-East; N3.6m in the South-South; N28m in the North-East while Abuja in the North-Central got N3.5m.

He said, “The Zakat allotment in the North-East increased and even doubled what we disbursed in both the South-East and South-South regions as indicated.

“The reasons for this were not far-fetched. We had to contend with the continued increase in the population of Internally Displaced Persons, victims of Boko Haram that needed to be resettled and reconnected to their natural habitat and the adverse effects of poverty in the region.”

Shuaib urged all beneficiaries to use the funds and items judiciously and redouble their efforts so that they too could begin to support others in the years ahead.

The JZWTF Acting Chairman, Alhaji Umaru AbdulMutallab, said the Abuja edition marked the beginning of the birth of a new dawn in the Zakat and Awqaf sector in the country.
