The attempt to recall the Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial zone, Dino Melaye, suffered a major setback as petitioners refused to participate in the verification exercise taking place on Saturday across 552 polling units in the seven Local Government Areas of the State.
Reports on polling units in Lokoja and Kogi Kotonkarfe LGAs revealed that as at 10:00 am there seemed to be unison among the purported petitioners who stayed away from the verification centres.
At the Phase One Primary School opposite Old Living Faith Church verification centre, no single petitioner appeared to be verified, except the security personnel and Independent National Electoral Commision, INEC, officials.
It was the same thing at the open Mammy Market unit 001 opposite Chari Maigumeri Barracks at the outskirt of Lokoja.
The INEC official who spoke said that the few people who turned up at the centre only went to check their names on the displayed list and left.
It was further gathered that the petitioners’ apathy to the exercise cut across all the seven Local Government Areas of the zone.
Some Community Leaders in Lokoja and Kabba Bunu LGAs disclosed that they have to direct their members to shun the exercise which they described as an affront to the people of the zone.
They noted that the failure of the exercise to recall Senator Dino Melaye, by all means, is a strong signal to Governor Yahaya Bello that he will face national disgrace.
They, however, warned INEC not to subvert the will of the people, urging them to display neutrality in the whole process.
It will be recalled that the attempt to recall Dino Melaye from the Senate went to Court of Appeal which directed INEC to continue with the process even as the election umpire fixed Saturday for the verification of petitioners.
