Sponsor of the championship, Barrister Kwashi Thompson  who is the Vice President of the Nigeria Handball Federation, explained that he was organising an U-18 Boys and Girls Handball championships for teams from the South South States in order to provide them with a platform where they can express themselves while keeping them active.

Speaking with newsmen in Port Harcourt yesterday, Thompson whose foundation, Tyronne and Thompson Foundation in the past, took U-18 handball teams to Sweden for the World U-18 Patile Championships said he was motivated by his desire to keep the young handballers busy and hone their skills.

“I have a knack for youth teams and since there will be an open championships in Makurdi soon, I thought of giving the young players from South South an opportunity to express themselves,” Kwashi said.

He said the development of handball in Nigeria and the South South zone in particular is his priority. However, he expressed regret that the development of the sport in the country has suffered a setback in recent times.

“The greatest setback has been lack of sufficient support from government. There has to be some basic support for the federation to witness a turnaround,”he said, adding that for the young players to develop, they need exposure and regular competitions.
