Lagos suspends approval of new tank farms over Apapa gridlock

To ensure that sanity returns to the Apapa-Oshodi expressway, the Lagos State Government has suspended approval for new tank farms in Apapa area of the city.

It also extended the work of the joint task force by one month and issued 30-day ultimatum to tank farms without adequate loading bay.

Rising from a closed door meeting with stakeholders in the maritime and transport sectors, including the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), Shippers Council, Tank Farm Owners, Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR, Security and Clearing and Forwarding Agents in Lagos, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, also resolved to accelerate and complete work on the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Trailer Park in Orile in the next one month.

Commissioner for Transportation, Ladi Lawanson, who briefed the media after the meeting, said all stakeholders have resolved to work together to ensure that sanity returns to the Apapa axis.

He said the state government would not hesitate to sanction recalcitrant operators who flout the resolutions on the matter going forward.

Lawanson, who was joined at the briefing by Managing Director of NPA, Hadiza Bala-Usman, Secretary to the State Government, Tunji Bello and other stakeholders, said the Federal Government in collaboration with the state government, had constituted a Security Task Force in the next 30 days to bring sanity to the roads.

However, shipping companies that were sanctioned for non-compliance over utilisation of holding bays at the ports have their grace period extended by five days.
