The state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Chike Oti, said only five out of the owners of the 54 vehicles consumed by the inferno, had reported the incident to the police.

Oti, who did not give details of their report, said, “We have not received any case of missing person but five persons whose vehicles were burnt, had reported the incident to the police”

A source at the state police command, however, told our correspondent that others might have died, injured or had no genuine insurance cover for their burnt vehicles.

The source said, “Others probably refused to report the incident because they felt that they would gain nothing since they may not have genuine insurance cover. It is also possible that some of them are currently receiving treatment or are even dead.”

Oti, told our correspondents that efforts were ongoing to arrest the driver.

He said, “We are still investigating the incident. The tanker driver bolted when the accident happened and that he had yet to report himself to the police. We are on his trail. We have not seen the families of any of the victims yet.”
