Lagos trains officers in education info mgt

In a quest to implement the Lagos State governor, Akinwunmi Ambode’s, policy thrust on Information Technology in the state’s public service, the Ministry of Education, Office of Education Quality Assurance, OEQA, has organised a two-day training on Education Management Information System, EMIS, for education districts coordinating directors, heads of department and zonal directors on electronic method of data collection and information management.

At the training, the Director- General, OEQA, Mrs. Ronke Soyombo, tasked the officers to further improve on the quality of technology-based data collection, information gathering, storage, dissemination, analysis, security and utilisation to raise the standard of teaching, learning outcomes, school self-evaluation and modules for intervention.

She stressed that OEQA’s drive is to develop a durable and reliable database and statistical records of its activities which will help to simplify the activities of the quality assurance office.

She said: “EMIS is a computer-based human process used to gather needed information. This could be used to grow the activities of the education system which includes management, planning and decision-making useful to planners and administrators to make the education system more efficient and effective.”

The training sessions took participants through the process and importance of data collection in the course of carrying out quality assurance duties while key elements of data were highlighted and the importance of developing ICT skills was emphasized to quality assurance evaluators for easy accessibility to information globally.

Soyombo listed the benefits of the training to include improved schools’ performance, digital record keeping, quick to read evaluated reports, future projections, ease of schools’ identification, supports and intervention.
