The Lagos State Government has cautioned residents against dumping their refuse on roads and medians across the state.

The Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Babatunde Durosimi-Etti, said residents, who indiscriminately dump refuse in unauthorised places, would face the wrath of the law, including engaging in communal service.

Durosimi-Etti, who spoke during a town hall meeting organised by Visionscape to sensitise market women and others to waste management and the Cleaner Lagos Initiative, explained that the project would offer the solution to the waste management challenge created by increase in population.

The commissioner appealed to Lagosians to bag their wastes properly so that refuse would not litter the streets, urging them to also report people seen dumping refuse in unauthorised places to the government for prompt action.

The Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, also warned residents of the state against dumping refuse in public places.

“Lagosians should ensure that the state is not littered with refuse; I will not beg for anybody who is arrested by the state government for dumping refuse in unauthorised places,” he said.

The monarch stated that he learnt that 13 people had been arrested for dumping refuse in unauthorised places, adding that residents should desist from such an act, but rather bag their wastes and put them in places where they would be carted away.
