Olufemi Atoyebi, Ibadan

The Peoples Democratic Party governorship aspirant in Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has criticised the state government’s spending policy.

In a statement from his campaign organisation, which was signed by the media coordinator, Dotun Oyelade, Makinde accused the state government of manipulating fiscal disbursement in favour of a few people.

The statement read, “The spate of unfulfilled promises by the Ajimobi administration, especially in the past three years, has been so staggering that the breach affects all facets of governance, particularly health, education and agriculture.

The statement also flayed the state government’s education policy, saying the construction of three model secondary schools was not a solution to the rot in the state’s education sector.

“The three model schools will soon be opened by the government amidst the usual propaganda, but what will two or three model schools achieve in the midst of acute lack and deprivations in the schools today where insufficient teachers are not motivated, with schools begging parents to recruit more teachers and the government forcing private schools to fund public schools,” it said.

But the state Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Olawale Sadare, alleged that Makinde’s outburst was triggered by his political ambition to become the governor of the state in 2019.

He said, “We are not unmindful of the fact that the likes of Makinde would always believe that the best way to get to the government house in 2019 was to downplay the monumental achievements of the APC administration of Governor Abiola Ajimobi, who has undoubtedly changed the face of governance in the state.

“To set the record straight, there is no money to be mismanaged in Oyo State today because the financial responsibility of the government is larger than the resources available. Having lost the golden chance to acquire the ideal political and public administration tutelage from the right source due to over-ambition, the sponsor of a faction of the decimated PDP in the state is not qualified to seek a mandate that is far bigger than his capability.”
