Maternal mortality: Kwara Assembly hails Saraki’s NGO intervention

Kwara State House of Assembly has commended positive impact of a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), the Wellbeing Foundation, in the area of emergency obstetric care and newborn care in 48 healthcare facilities across the state.

The state lawmakers gave the commendation when the founder of the NGO, Mrs Toyin Saraki, lMrsther members of her NGO on an advocacy visit to the Assembly complex in Ilorin.

The House, which noted that the NGO had brought about improvement in the capacity of hospital providers and facilities in the state and University Teaching Hospitals (UITH), said that the intervention had encouraged quality health care delivery in the state.

The Wellbeing Foundation, the pet project of the wife of the Senate President, Barr. Toyin Saraki was launched in 2004.

The NGO in collaboration with Johnson & Johnson had made the significant impact on the lives of the people of the state in particular and Nigeria in general.

Impressed by her interest in maternal and child’s health, the state lawmakers christened Mrs Saraki as a worthy ambassador of Kwara state.

In his remark, the Speaker, Dr Ali Ahmad, explained that the House was celebrating the wife of the Senate President, in view of her commitment to serving humanity.

Ahmad noted with delight that Mrs Saraki, whom he observed, had touched the lives of the vulnerable said she had made the state a pacesetter of health indices in the country.

Responding, Mrs Toyin Saraki said her visit to the House was aimed at ensuring that all stakeholders at all levels promote strategies that would reduce the rate of maternal and neonatal mortality.

She expressed the confidence that the scaling up of innovative programmes like Mama Care, maternal programmes, WBFA’S Emergency obstetric and newborn care and support of local and international partners, the lives of mothers and children would be saved.

She praised the legislature for making the State House of Assembly a pacesetter and cynosure of all eyes in the country.
