A brief summary of a report by Robert Mueller, US special counsel, says President Donald Trump’s campaign did not “conspire or coordinate” with Russia in an attempt to influence the 2016 election.
Robert Barr, US attorney general, said this in a four-page letter of a long-awaited report by Mueller, which he sent to congress leaders on Sunday.
Barr said Mueller’s Russia investigation did not find sufficient evidence that the US president obstructed justice, or that his campaign coordinated with Moscow’s efforts to influence the 2016 election.
“The Special Counsel states that ‘while this report does not conclude that the President committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him’,” Barr said.
“Mueller’s report stated that the investigation did not establish that members of the Trump Campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities.
“Mueller did not find that the Trump campaign, or anyone associated with it, conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in these efforts, despite multiple offers from Russian-affiliated individuals to assist the Russian campaign.”
Barr said he and Rod Rosenstein, deputy attorney general, “concluded that the evidence developed during the Special Counsel’s investigation is not sufficient to establish that the President committed an obstruction-of-justice offense”.
The report added that “the lack of a finding of obstruction was based on the recognition that “the evidence does not establish that the President was involved in an underlying crime related to Russian election interference.”
Shortly after the release of Barr’s summary, Trump took to Twitter to write: “No Collusion, No Obstruction, Complete and Total EXONERATION. KEEP AMERICA GREAT!”

The US president had repeatedly described the inquiry as a witch hunt.
