ABEOKUTA—A 32-year-old father of the stolen three-week-old baby in Ile-Ife, Peter Oluwaseun, said his wife fainted thrice after their baby was stolen by a visitor in Ita-Osi, Ife-North Local Government Area of Osun State.
Oluwaseun spoke with Vanguard after Ogun State Police Command paraded a-26-year-old woman, Bunmi Adebayo at the command’s headquarters in Abeokuta for allegedly, stealing the baby in Modakeke, Osun State.
The Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu while parading the suspect before newsmen, said the suspect who resided in Magboro, Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State, was arrested on Saturday at Orile Imo village by the men of the state police command, where she had fled with the baby.
Iliyasu said the suspect had lied to her husband who used to visit her at her abode in Orile-Imo at intervals that she was pregnant.
Iliyasu, noted that after nine months, the suspect called her husband and broke the news that she had been delivered of a baby boy.
According to Iliyasu, the news gladdened the heart of the husband, Gbenga Adebayo, who rushed down to her residence.
He said: “The husband became curious when he demanded for the placenta and his wife was unable to present it. Again, when the husband asked her to breastfeed the baby in his presence, she was unable to do so.
“Having realised the curiosity of her husband, she absconded from home and her husband had to report to the Police that his wife was missing. A police search team caught up with her and the stolen baby at Orile Imo last Saturday, where she was arrested and the baby was rescued.”
While speaking, Oluwaseun who travelled from Osun State to claim his baby, said: “My wife fainted three times after her baby was stolen. We were in and out of hospital because my wife did not find it easy. She fell sick, refused to eat and fainted three different times.
“I am a printer. When my wife called me that I should come over that our baby had disappeared. I became restive and I rushed to where she was. On getting there, she had fainted and was rushed to the hospital where she was revived.”
The suspect, Mrs Adebayo who claimed to be a stylist, said desperation to have a baby after 10 years of a childless marriage made her to steal the baby.
She said: “I am 26 years old and I have been married for 10 years, but I am yet to have any child for my husband.
“I stole the baby out of desperation to have a child for my husband, and never meant to harm the baby. I had eight miscarriages.
“My parents live in Ile-Ife, so I went to visit them. That was when I hatched the plan.
“I approached a woman that I needed an apartment to rent and she and her daughter (the mother of the baby) said they had an apartment for rent at Modakeke.
“We took a motorcycle to the place and when we alighted I told them that I wanted to withdraw money from an ATM nearby. It was from there I absconded with the baby, who was strapped to my back.”
