THE Centre for Women’s Health and Information (CEWHIN) has trained 77 stakeholders selected from 40 schools across three local governments areas in Ogun State for effective monitoring of the Ogun Home Grown School Feeding Programme (HGSFP).
This step was to ensure transparency and accountability in the exercise that is being carried out in primary schools across the State.
CEWHIN Programme Coordinator, Mrs Banke Akinrimisi, while speaking with the Nigerian Tribune at the opening of the two -day workshop organised for members of the School-Based Management Committees (SBMC) and Parents Teachers Associations (PTA) selected from 13 schools in Abeokuta South LGA, explained that the stakeholders have a great role to play in ensuring its success.
Akinrinmisi said the training would build the capacity of the stakeholders to enable them to engage constructively with the government in any of its programmes.
CEWHIN is one of the three non-governmental organisations being supported by MacArthur Foundation to complement the efforts of the government of the State in monitoring the successful implementation of the school feeding programme.
She said, “CEWHIN is working in three local governments in Odogbolu, Abeokuta South and Yewa South. We believe that the existing structures within the community should be strengthened to be able to do what they are supposed to be doing ordinarily.
“The school management committee and the Parents Teachers Associations have the responsibility of ensuring that the School system run effectively and that development comes to the school. Since it is their primary duty to ensure that things run effectively in the school, we are training them to be able to monitor the programme.
“The focus of our programme is on transparency and accountability in governance so that community people or groups and associations know their rights, their duties and responsibilities.

This is to enable them demand accountability from government.
That is exactly what we are doing with SBMCs and the PTAs. They are being trained to acquire skills for effective and constructive engagement with the government so that government can know what their priorities are and be able to act on such priorities. When stakeholders engage government constructively, we are bound to have a society that is making progress.”
