The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to accept results from Nembe LGA for the Brass/Nembe Federal Constituency election in Bayelsa State, saying it was marred by violence.
The result that seems to favour the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the area, Isreal Sunny-Goli, arrived the INEC collation centre in Twon-Brass about 4:37 pm Sunday, was brought in by party agents escorted by over 30 armed military personnel.
It took the intervention of military personnel to calm frayed nerves, as the Commissioner for Education, Jonathan Obuobite and Secretary of the APC, Alabo Martins engaged themselves in a heated argument over the authenticity of the result.
According to Obuobite, the election didn’t hold in many parts of Ogbolomabiri (Nembe) while in Bassanbiri (Nembe) election materials were hijacked by thugs suspected to be APC loyalists.
The candidate of the PDP in the area, Mrs Marie Ebikake, who led a peaceful protest in Twon-Brass said they are calling on the INEC include the result from Nembe Bassambiri, alleging election in the area were marred by irregularities.
“We also want to urge the INEC to live up to its responsibility as we will not accept result from Nembe Bassambiri because the election didn’t hold in that area.”
The State Chairman of the PDP, Chief Moses Cleopas, had earlier said in a statement that Former Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Timipre Sylva and one Kodjo masterminded the hijacked of materials for seven wards in Bassambiri.
The PDP Chairman called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) to note the violence and the thuggery in the area and cancel the election in the affected areas.
While speaking to newsmen in Twon-Brass, the candidate of the APC, Sunny-Goli, said he has confidence that the INEC would do the right thing and ensure that every vote in the area.
“I know anything about the hijacking of materials. I am not a security man, and I am sure the INEC is not responsible for security. So I don’t know what they are talking about.
“Yesterday the results that came in showed that I won my polling unit and lost my ward. And the PDP candidate was celebrating. Today that the results are favouring me, they are complaining.”
