The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Muhammad Badandede, has told foreigners living in the country not to meddle in the forthcoming elections.

He said this on Thursday during a summit organised by the Lagos State Command of the service with the title, ‘Collaborative Strategy at Ensuring that Migrants Live Peacefully in Nigeria: Lagos State as a Case Study.’

The Comptroller Immigration, Lagos State Command, Ekpedeme King, who represented Badandede, noted that Nigeria had provided a friendly environment for migrants, particularly from West African sub-region, adding that many of the migrants resided in Lagos.

He said, “Therefore, as we approach the 2019 general elections, no foreigner should allow himself or herself to be used to meddle in the electoral process either through persuasion, coercion, harassment or inducement. Such is not acceptable in any part of the world.”

He stated that any foreigner caught subverting the electoral process would not just be deported, but would be tried according to the country’s electoral laws.

The Secretary to the State Government, Mr Tunji Bello, who was represented by Mr Adeshina Odeyemi, said there was the need for peaceful coexistence between host communities and migrants.

“This forum will avail us opportunity to share experiences and best practices to the challenges confronting us on finding collaborative strategy at ensuring peaceful co-existence between migrants and Nigerians. This deliberation will impact on our policies and contribute to achieving our goals,” he said.
