The Nigerian Railway Corporation says it has taken proactive measures to ensure security of passengers travelling on the Abuja-Kaduna-Abuja train.
The NRC in a statement signed by its Deputy Director of Public Relations, Mr. Yakub Mahmood, said additional security equipment and personnel had been deployed to check uncivilised and unpatriotic activities on the train.
A few days ago, there were reports of miscreants stoning passengers along the Abuja-Kaduna railway corridor. The NRC, which confirmed the incident, however, denied the story that the train was attacked by robbers.
Mahmood said passengers should be assured of uncompromised safety at the rail stations as well as onboard the train.
He said the incident was a security threat and a deliberate attempt to damage the Federal Government’s property which was provided to alleviate the transportation problems in the country and serve as a source of employment to the people residing in the area.
He said, “The NRC has taken some proactive measures through the deployment of additional security equipment and personnel to check these uncivilised and unpatriotic tendencies
“To this end, the NRC management is appealing to the youths, parents, guardians especially the traditional rulers along the Abuja-Kaduna railway corridor to assist in enlightening their subjects to desist from stoning moving trains in their domain as the train operations and services greatly facilitate the socio-economic development of their areas.”
The corporation said anyone found endangering the safety of passengers would be prosecuted.
The Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, had earlier debunked the report of robbery on the train, saying there were armed security personnel on each train ride to forestall such ugly situation.
He said, “I saw one fake news that armed robbers attacked the Abuja-Kaduna train, which is not correct. Some Nigerians fabricated the story. On every coach, we have armed policemen. How can armed robbers attack the train? It may be possible at the station, but it cannot happen while the train is moving and they said it happened at Rijana community.
“We have provided security to make it easy for those who are travelling from Kaduna to Abuja to have cheaper and easy form of transportation (by rail).”
